Take advantage of these energy-saving tax incentives while you still can!
Americans claimed over $8 billion in tax credits for home upgrades made in 2023, but now those credits are going away. However, just because the bill has been signed into law doesn't mean all those incentives are gone in an instant, but you will need to act quickly.
Here are three important dates you should know, along with which incentives will come to an end on those dates:
• September 30, 2025: You need to buy an electric vehicle by this date to be eligible for a tax credit up to $7,500 for a new EV and $4,000 for a used one.
• December 31, 2025: This is the big one. This is when tax credits for most home improvements end. Solar panels, heat pumps, water heaters, windows, doors, insulation, and many more need to be fully installed by the end of the year.
• June 30, 2026: If you’re considering adding a home EV charger, you still have almost a year to qualify for a 30% credit of up to $1,000.
There are some federal home improvement rebates, such as those for heat pumps and other energy-efficient appliances, that survived through a program administered at the state level that was already funded. There may also be state and local incentives available, so check with your utility.
